Did you know?
- According to a 2023 estimate by the Slovenian Resuscitation Council, around 1,400–1,700 people in Slovenia suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest every year – an average of about 4–5 a day.
- Around 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in Europe happen at home or in private residences. That's why knowing CPR can help save the life of someone close to you.
- Common causes of cardiac arrest include heart disease, severe bleeding, choking and severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
- In cardiac arrest, every minute counts. Immediate CPR and early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) significantly increase the chances of survival.
- The survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest is around 7–12%.
- Without CPR and defibrillation, every minute that passes reduces the chance of survival by 10%.
- Without adequate blood circulation, severe brain damage can occur within just a few minutes.
- Anyone can use an AED. The device gives instructions and determines whether an electric shock is needed.
- Emergency medical services (paramedics) take 10–15 minutes or longer to reach the casualty.
Act immediately
If a person is unresponsive, call 112 immediately and switch on the speakerphone. If they are not breathing normally, start CPR and follow the dispatcher's instructions.
